Sun, 26 Jun 2016 16:45:10 -0400
By Elizabeth Barber NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of people draped in the rainbow hues of LGBT pride turned out for parades across the United States on Sunday, two weeks after a massacre at a Florida nightclub stirred fear and solidarity among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The march in New York, held every year since 1970, began at noon near the Empire State Building and ended at Greenwich Village's Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the gay rights movement and the newest national monument. Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, joined the march for a few blocks in an unannounced appearance.

Pope says Church should ask forgiveness from gays for past treatment
Sun, 26 Jun 2016 16:43:44 -0400
By Philip Pullella ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Sunday that Christians and the Roman Catholic Church should seek forgiveness from homosexuals for the way they had treated them. Speaking to reporters aboard the plane taking him back to Rome from Armenia, he also said the Church should ask forgiveness for the way it has treated women, for turning a blind eye to child labor and for "blessing so many weapons" in the past. In the hour-long freewheeling conversation that has become a trademark of his international travels, Francis was asked if he agreed with recent comments by a German Roman Catholic cardinal that the Church should apologize to gays.

Cocolí (Panama) (AFP) - Panama on Sunday declared its century-old canal open to a new generation of supersized cargo ships after nearly a decade of massive expansion works aimed at capturing burgeoning US-Asia trade routes. President Juan Carlos Varela, who hailed the renovated canal as "the route that unites the world," was to lead a glitzy ceremony attended by a dozen heads of state and various other foreign dignitaries. The United States -- builder of the original canal, which opened in 1914 and is still in operation alongside the additions -- was being represented by the US ambassador to Panama and Jill Biden, the wife of the US vice president.
